Inkjet Printers
An inkjet printer is any printer that places extremely small droplets of ink onto paper to create an image. If you ever look at a piece of paper that has come out of an inkjet printer, you know the following:
- 1 The dots are extremely small (usually between 50 and 60 microns in diameter), so small that they are tinier than the diameter of a human hair (70 microns)!
- 2 The dots are positioned very precisely, with resolutions of up to 1440x720 dots per inch (dpi).
- 3 The dots can have different colors combined together to create photo-quality images.

Printing Photos and The Cost Involved
Ink jet printers have become very inexpensive while improving their speed and quality greatly. The reason for this contradiction is the manufacturers make their revenue goals through supplies for the printers, primarily ink cartridges. The cost of a printed page with about 10% coverage is around 10 cents. Notice I said 10% coverage. This means a photo uses up significantly more ink than does printed text. If you have a large number of photos to print, you might be better off taking them to a printer or uploading them online to a business that does this. A printed photo at Walgreens is usually around $.29 per copy. You cannot do it for this at home.
The plus part of doing it yourself is the control you have over the process such as cropping the picture, enhancing the colors. I would not do without my inkjet printer. Most of my printing these days is on the laser printer but I still like to print out the occasional photo of the grandkids. My HP inkjet printer lets me do that.
